Kami Mugs

by Takahashi Kougei

£48.00

This handmade wooden cup was designed by Oji Masanori and made from castor aralia grown in Hokkaido, Japan by Takahashi Kougei, a group of master craftsman. The mug is shaped by hand using a wheel and is worked until it is only a couple of millimeters-thick. "Kami" means paper in Japanese and so the mug is named after its sheer texture. The whole process of crafting the Kami Mug takes approximately 4 weeks from the rough lumber to the final product. It is breathtaking to know how much time and effort is poured into each one of the wooden mugs. The mug gives a smooth, warm touch on your lips and is perfect for tea or coffee as the wood works as a natural insulator, keeping the drink hot. THE DESIGNER

Takahashi Kougei is a group of wood tableware makers and designers. Founded in Hokkaido, Japan in 1965 by Shoichi Takahashi, a lathe worker, the group originally produced table legs and ornamental pillars but changed direction in the 1980’s after a downturn in the domestic furniture market.

The group now consists of, Oji Masanori, Ona Rina and Takahashi Hidetoshi, who is the president of the group and originally worked at a construction company before joining his father and turnery mentor at Takahashi Kougei in 1992.
